As a private tutor, I often see students struggle with studying effectively. They may put in long hours and effort but still struggle to retain information and perform well on exams. The truth is that studying smarter, not harder, is the key to effective learning. In this blog post, I'll explore tips and strategies that can help parents and students learn more efficiently and achieve better results.

Create a study plan
The first step in effective studying is to create a study plan. This plan should include a schedule for when and how long your child will study, what materials they will review, and what goals they hope to accomplish. A study plan helps students stay organised and focused, reducing stress and anxiety.
Break down complex topics
Breaking down complex topics into smaller, more manageable parts can help students learn more effectively. By dividing a large topic into smaller parts, students can focus on one concept at a time and build their knowledge gradually. Often, students get stuck at an obstacle and give up when they can't understand it, or try to get by without fully understanding it. This is mostly because they haven't broken it up into small enough pieces!
Don't just read from a text book, be proactive!
Active learning involves engaging with the material actively, rather than passively reading or listening. Examples of active learning include summarising information in your own words, creating flashcards, or teaching the material to someone else. In my sessions, I encourage my clients to practice explaining concepts back to me, which has numerous benefits including increased confidence talking academically, demonstrating understanding and me being able to correct them when necessary.
Take breaks
Taking breaks is crucial for effective studying. Research has shown that taking short breaks every 45-60 minutes can help students retain information better and reduce mental fatigue. Encourage your child to take breaks to recharge their minds and avoid burnout.
Get enough sleep
Sleep is crucial for effective learning. During sleep, the brain consolidates information and forms connections between different pieces of information. Encourage your child to get enough sleep, ideally 7-8 hours a night, to help their brains process and retain information more effectively.
Use technology to your advantage
Technology can be a powerful tool for effective studying. There are numerous apps and software programs available that can help students study more efficiently. For example, flashcard apps like Quizlet allow students to create digital flashcards that they can study on their phones or computers. Similarly, productivity apps like Forest (I highly recommend this!) can help students stay focused by blocking distracting websites.
Seek help when needed
Finally, encourage your child to seek help when they need it. Whether it's from a teacher, a tutor, or a peer, there's no shame in asking for help. Encourage your child to reach out when they're struggling, so they can get the support they need to succeed. A free option for this is free online forums like TheStudentRoom which allows you to post queries for peers to answer, I made use of this during my students and proved indispensible to my learning! In conclusion, studying smarter, not harder, is the key to effective learning. By creating a study plan, breaking down complex topics, being proactive, taking breaks, getting enough sleep, using technology to their advantage, and seeking help when needed, your child can learn more efficiently and achieve better results. As a parent or private tutor, you can help your child implement these tips and strategies and watch them succeed academically.
